Summer beauty tips for great hair, skin and nails

It’s almost time for the long hot European summer! And if like me, you grew up on the coast and summers remind you of long days spent by the ocean eating freshly cut fruit while dry salt forms white patches on your sunburned body; and cotton shirts clinging to your damp bikini as you listen to the waves crash as the sun sets, then you also know that summer, while so rejuvenating for the soul, it can take a toll on your skin and hair. That’s why we’ve put together a list of helpful tips that will help your hair stay silky and your skin super smooth.

HAIR
Whether you’re out on the beach or poolside, ultraviolet rays and chlorinated water can be tough on your hair as it compromises your hair’s outer layer. And that, coupled with the fact that you’re shampooing more often than usual (note that post poolside and beach day showers) your hair could be left feeling and looking dull and dry. And that’s not even taking into account the damage your heat styling tools adds.

Swap your daily shampoo for a dry shampoo to give your hair some time to recover. When you do wash your hair use always opt for a sulphate-free shampoo that’s more gentle on your hair, paired with a deep cleansing conditioner to bring your hair back to life. We love the **Wild Cow Strengthening Conditioner by Cowshed. And if your vacay allows for a night on the town, swap your heat stylers for some coconut or macadamia oil to add a refined touch to your sun-kissed locks.

SKIN
Let’s start with your face. Summer is the perfect time to try a lighter, nude foundation or BB cream to enhance your natural look. Most BB Creams and nude foundations out there right now provide enough cover to blend in redness and uneven tones while still feeling super light on your face. Always go for the ones that has a high built-in SPF for sun protection.

Now also remember if submerging your body in water repeatedly, as one does on vacay, your skin is more prone to dry out, as the water removes the surface lipids, allowing the moisture to leak out of your skin. What you can do to keep your skin looking and feeling healthy throughout the summer is use a good sunscreen that provides sufficient moisture and sun protection. (Don’t forget to sunscreen your ears!) At night, swap out the sunscreen for a thin body lotion such as the **Orange & Vanilla Hydrating Body Milk from Lucky Cloud Skincare

NAILS
Don’t forget your nails! Research has found that repetitive wetting and drying of your nails can cause it to split and weaken. So use a good nail cream to strengthen your nails and only use a nail buffer that’s soft to the touch; not gritty like a nail file. Avoid metal cuticle scrapers as this can cause more damage than good. Opt for the softer **Get Your Kit Off Cuticle Remover by Butter London which gently softens and removes overgrown cuticles for beautifully groomed nails.

If you’ve got time, try a DIY at home nail scrub by mixing 2 cups of sugar 1 cup of olive oil which is rich in vitamin E. Rub the scrub over your hands and nails and remove with a warm washcloth after 15 minutes.

See? It's easy to go cruelty-free this summer. All you have to do is start.
